Are you looking for a more eco-responsible life , more in tune with nature ? Do you want to introduce your children to environmental protection ? You've come to the right place. Don't move! I'll take you on a journey towards ecological transition with zero-waste activities for children.
1/ Homemade salt dough
Here's a recipe you can't miss under any circumstances. Simple, easy to make, and economical, it's a timeless and essential activity. Kids will love making it, shaping it, and transforming it in a thousand and one ways. To do this, you'll need:
- 2 glasses of flour;
- 1 glass of salt;
- 1 glass of warm water;
- and a salad bowl.
Pour the 2 cups of flour and the fine salt into the container. Add the warm water and let your angel stir.
Got some extra salt dough left over? Don't panic, don't throw anything away. It keeps perfectly well in a freezer bag or airtight container.
2/ Reuse toilet paper rolls
Here's another activity to do quietly at home on a rainy or hot day. Let your imagination run wild and reuse your toilet paper rolls in unusual and fun ways. This is, of course, for those who are still struggling to switch to washable rolls . You can do:
- a small pot for germinating seeds for the vegetable garden;
- a bird feeder;
- characters or animals;
- a fortified castle;
- etc.
A little fantasy to keep your child busy for a few hours.
3/ Cook seasonal fruits and vegetables
This is the best way to get your children to taste garden produce, especially vegetables. We all know they're not exactly fans of them. However, by picking and cooking them, they'll definitely want to try them. As for the peelings, they'll end up in the compost !
Prepare your meal with your family and store it until the evening in airtight containers using bowl covers and bee-wraps .
4/ Make ice pops
In no time, your child can make their own ice cream and enjoy it a few hours later. The recipe takes just 5 minutes:
- mix water and your favorite syrup in a large pitcher;
- pour everything into your molds with a stick recovered from the previous summer;
- store in the freezer for at least 3 hours;
- Unmold by dipping the bottom of the molds in hot water.
An easy recipe to refresh your children.
5/ Make a terrarium
Simple to design, this is an original and decorative activity. Take a recycled glass container, transparent, easy to clean, then:
- place a layer of pebbles or clay balls at the bottom of the jar;
- add soil on top;
- Carefully plant the plants in the terrarium.
This is where the fun begins for your little ones. They can place figures inside to liven up the landscape. A bean or even a Playmobil figure can brighten things up. Now it's up to them to take care of the plants.
🌱 And why not recycle coffee grounds for your terrarium?
6/ Painting pebbles
Take a walk along the beach or river with your children. Stock up on flat pebbles and bring them with you in your fabric bag . In addition to skipping stones, they can paint them or turn them into little creatures like a ladybug:
- clean the stone to remove any traces of dust or earth;
- paint ¾ of the pebble red and let it dry;
- cover the remaining quarter in black;
- draw a black line along the entire length of the stone.
🌱 This is another mouse you can make with a pretty wool tail glued to the pebble.
7/ Make a cuddly toy out of fabric or felt
Why not make a cuddly toy for your child using fabric scraps? It doesn't take much time and your toddler can help make it:
- cut 2 squares of the same size of 15 x 15 cm;
- of course add the seam allowances of 1 cm;
- lay a square of fabric representing the body of the cuddly toy flat, right side towards you;
- on the upper half, glue small pieces of felt to form the eyes, nose, mouth;
- go through the machine and make some straight lines.
Don't have a sewing machine in your home yet? Then sew by hand! Your child will be even more proud of you. All they need is a pretty blanket to take them to naptime with their new cuddly toy.
8/ Do zero waste activities with the children
There are many eco-friendly activities you can do with your kids. Sometimes, all it takes is a little imagination. You can also:
- play cards;
- do a puzzle;
- paint or sculpt;
- make a shell necklace;
- take out the board games;
- enjoy homemade waffles or pancakes with them for a snack;
- carry out a musical blind test for children;
- etc.
9/ Keep busy with eco-friendly coloring games
Find several eco-friendly games for your children to introduce them to zero waste:
- The coloring mat to take with you on the go. Keep them busy at a party at your friends' house. They'll make a splash with this eco-friendly toy and won't leave a trace on your guests.
